Description and Symptoms A lung condition causing obstruction of the airways, asthma occurs when increased bronchial mucous secretion leads to spasms of the muscles surrounding the bronchi. Over 30 million people in the U.S. are afflicted with asthma. Asthma can be difficult to diagnose and can be mistaken with bronchitis, emphysema, and postnasal drip. It is a serious condition, but with appropriate diagnosis and prompt treatment, serious health risks can generally be avoided. There are two types of asthma: Extrinsic asthma—Considered to be triggered by allergens. Attacks are generally initiated by exposure to smoke, dust, molds, pollens, dander, and foods. Intrinsic asthma—Due to other factors such as petrochemical products, cold air, exercise, infection, emotional upset, pollution, and other irritating inhalants. A predisposition to asthma is often hereditary. While many people have a mixture of the two types, extrinsic asthma is more common in children, whereas intrinsic asthma is often associated with adult-onset asthma. Symptoms: -Labored breathing and wheezing -Elevated blood pressure -Cough, acute or gradual -Shortness of breath, feeling starved for air -Anxiety -Tightness of chest muscles -Dehydration Causes: There are a variety of causes of asthma: exercise; adrenal disorders; animal dander; emotional upset; food sensitivities; inhalation of cold air or irritating substances (food additives, smoke, gas fumes, paint fumes); and reactions to specific allergens, such as pollens or mold. Other influences that can bring on asthma include: anxiety, extreme humidity or dryness, fear, and low blood sugar.
